The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
